Focus Area: Age Friendly, Community Outreach, Disability Services, Poverty, Public Health

Hospice Volunteers of Somerset County seeks a caring and compassionate individual to support its volunteer, community education and outreach programs that provide quality end-of-life care services.

We are 35 years strong! HVOSC was formed in 1989 and has continued to support clients throughout the years. The mission of Hospice Volunteers of Somerset County (HVOSC) is to provide support and compassion for those we serve. Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. The state of Maine requires all Hospice Volunteers to engage in a robust training program that includes in-person, on-line, work outside the classroom and a background check. We work closely with families to identify specific needs, such as transportation to treatment clinic or medical appointments, meal preparation, respite for the caregiver, pet care and more. While most hospice clients receive services in his/her home, some clients are visited in nursing homes. Once a family has lost a loved one, HVOSC can also provide bereavement and grief support services, such as mailings, phone calls, support groups and memorial events. All of our services are provided at no charge to the residents of Somerset County. Our volunteers graciously donate their time and talents to provide care and comfort for those in need. The average income in Maine is $63,182 and 11% live in poverty. The average income in Somerset County is $47,488 and the rate of poverty is 18%, higher than the state poverty rate. In Somerset County, 31.4 % of senior citizens live alone and experience barriers to health care services, reliable transportation and food insecurity (www.mainechna.org). The successful candidate will work closely with the Program Director and Volunteer Coordinator to expand and enhance and expand our volunteer program, community education and outreach. At a time when the safety net may be weakening for some as they experience a life limiting illness, we are proud to be able to be able to offer help and support for our friends and neighbors at a difficult time in their life.
