Portland Public Schools seeks a VISTA with passion and communications skills to showcase student’s academic achievements, and to guide and inform families and stakeholders, in support of our mission!
The Portland Public Schools are responsible for ensuring a challenging, relevant, and joyful education that empowers every learner to make a difference in the world. All learners will be fully prepared to participate and succeed in a diverse and ever‐changing world. We build relationships among families, educators, and the community to promote the healthy development and academic achievement of every learner. Our schools make up Maine’s largest and most diverse school district. The Portland Public School District serves four high schools, four middle schools, and eleven elementary schools.
If Portland Public Schools intentionally engages its community and attracts, supports, and retains a strong and diverse team who hold all students to high expectations in academics and social/emotional learning then all PPS students will graduate prepared and empowered to pursue their personal goals!
The AmeriCorps VISTA member’s efforts will serve our community through creating and implementing modern communication strategies and systems that will greatly enhance and improve our existing infrastructure. The goal will be to create sustainable, effective processes that will ensure all members of the Portland Public School community will always have access to the best available information in keeping with the District’s Comprehensive Plan and that students, their families and the community will receive information in a way that is accessible for all.
Benefits
- Bi-Weekly Living Allowance of $957.46/Biweekly
- Relocation Allowance of $750 plus $.40 per mile (for those moving more than 50 miles)

The Goodwill VISTA Partnership works to reduce poverty in communities across Maine and New Hampshire through indirect service, such as creating and running programs, fundraising and grant writing, communications work, increasing social media presence, recruiting volunteers, as well as assisting with community assessments, among other projects. Focus areas of partner agencies include public health, food security, environmental justice, educational support, youth development, housing, and more!
