Community Dental Outreach and Communications Coordination VISTA

Position Summary

Position details

Term Date: Flexible Start Dates for Year-Long Positions
Location: Portland, ME
Focus Area: Asylum Seeker Support, Community Outreach, Poverty, Public Health

Community Dental is a nonprofit in Maine that provides oral healthcare through dental centers in Biddeford, Farmington, Lewiston, and Portland. We serve over 11,000 patients in a single year and are the largest dental nonprofit in the state. In 2024 we delivered oral healthcare services worth $12.5 million.

Each dental center is the heart of how we serve our mission to improve the lives of children and adults in our communities through needed, accessible, quality, comprehensive oral healthcare.

Increasing access to oral healthcare. We focus on affordable and accessible care for people with lower incomes and those experiencing poverty. We do this by accepting the state’s public insurance, MaineCare, managing insurance billing, and offering sliding-scale fees based on household income.

Seven out of every ten Community Dental patients are members of a low-income household enrolled in MaineCare. Children and adults from lower-income households are more likely to experience untreated dental cavities and oral diseases disproportionately than those with higher incomes.

We treat medically underserved populations, including immigrants and refugees, people with emotional, mental, and physical disabilities, veterans without VA healthcare, migrant workers, and people who are homeless.

Our AmeriCorps VISTA member’s primary efforts will be to create and implement digital communication deliverables, strategies, and systems to strengthen and connect Community Dental relationships. These efforts aim to create sustainable, effective processes to ensure board directors, individual donors, and grantors have access to the best available information. This will improve Community Dental’s ability to access funding to operate our programs.
