Windham Primary School serves children in grades K-3 and their families in Windham, a vibrant suburb of Portland. Windham offers abundant recreational opportunities with lakes, mountains, and scenic coastline. The school is supported by an engaged community and is committed to providing an education that empowers children to reach their full potential. The site encourages personal transportation due to the nature of the project and Maine’s rural geography.
The AmeriCorps member at RSU-14 Windham Primary addresses the social determinants of health for students in grades K-3 by supporting education, mental health, and community resilience. The member develops and leads activities that promote physical and mental well-being, recruits at-risk families to gain skills for healthier lifestyles, and encourages school and after-school program attendance, a key factor in long-term health outcomes. The member assists in implementing the BARR (Building Assets, Reducing Risks) program, expands family engagement initiatives, builds strong relationships with students, staff, and community partners, plans events, connects families with local resources, and strengthens partnerships with community organizations. The member also supports public health by promoting behaviors that minimize drug and alcohol misuse.
As the Student and Community Engagement Coordinator, the AmeriCorps member in this role will:
- Develop and maintain clear and frequent communications with the host site supervisor
- Develop and lead engaging activities that support physical and mental well-being
- Promote healthy living practices for children and families through programming and events
- Recruit at-risk families to participate in programs that build skills and knowledge for healthier lifestyles
- Encourage and support student attendance in school and after-school programs to improve long-term health outcomes
- Assist in implementing the BARR (Building Assets, Reducing Risks) program to reduce absenteeism and high-risk behaviors
- Expand and support family engagement initiatives, building strong relationships with students, families, staff, and community partners
- Collaborate with learners, staff, administration, and volunteers to plan events and activities
- Gather and connect families with community resources, strengthening partnerships with local organizations
- Help the host site provide public health interventions to the community
- Regularly survey and track data on accomplishments
In addition to AmeriCorps benefits, including a stipend, education award, and health insurance, site benefits include reimbursement for mileage expenses associated with project-related travel from the host site at the rate that the organization reimburses existing volunteers and/or staff, and Windham Primary School Staff training and professional development.

Goodwill NNE’s Public Health AmeriCorps program helps build the public health workforce in Maine and New Hampshire. We partner with health centers, substance misuse recovery centers, public schools and other types of agencies meeting public health needs to provide AmeriCorps members. Those members: engage youth in programs to prevent substance misuse; create food security programs, provide vaccination education, create community integration opportunities for people with disabilities, and research and implement public health interventions to meet the pressing public health needs of underserved communities. Members gain strong skills through their experiences and often get hired for professional public health positions immediately upon completion!
