Join the Maine Appalachian Trail Club and help open the door to the outdoors for all. As the A.T. Outreach Steward, you’ll expand equitable access to the Trail in Maine—connecting youth groups and underrepresented communities to hands-on conservation education, hiking, camping, and trail stewardship adventures.

The Maine Appalachian Trail Club (MATC) builds, maintains, and protects the section of the Appalachian Trail (A.T. or Trail) in Maine, extending from Katahdin to Grafton Notch. This work includes maintaining the treadway, campsites and corridor lands to safeguard and ensure access to the wild regions of Maine through which the Trail passes. The Appalachian Trail National Scenic Trail in Maine offers a rugged, awe-inspiring landscape of northern hardwood forests, spruce–fir ecosystems, glacial lakes, remote ponds and streams, and alpine summits. This corridor serves as both a vital carbon sink and a climate refuge for native species. The Maine Appalachian Trail Club’s wilderness education program uniquely connects participants to this nationally significant landscape through immersive, place-based experiences on the Appalachian Trail itself. MATC is one of thirty clubs responsible for maintaining the Appalachian Trail in partnership with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the National Park Service, and state agencies. Each year, hundreds of volunteers contribute roughly 15,000 hours to the Trail. They maintain trail sections, clear downed and hazard trees, maintain waterbars, paint blazes, build bog bridges, build and repair shelters and privies, clean firepits, remove trash, monitor corridor lands, publish a newsletter, and maintain MATC’s website, databases, and more.

The Maine Appalachian Trail Club seeks an AmeriCorps Member for its wilderness education program, which expands equitable access to the Appalachian Trail in Maine. The AmeriCorps A.T. Outreach Steward will engage youth groups and underrepresented communities—including public school students, people with disabilities, and other community groups—in conservation education, hiking, camping, and trail stewardship experiences. This project seeks to reduce barriers to accessing the Appalachian Trail, cultivate lasting connections between participants and wilderness landscapes, lead stewardship and trail maintenance initiatives, and deliver high-quality Leave No Trace education informed by hands-on trail management experience.

The AmeriCorps member in this role will:

  • Plan and organize hiking and camping trips during the late fall and winter seasons
  • Deliver pre-trip educational sessions in schools and community settings
  • Instruct participants on trip planning, preparation, and gear selection
  • Teach alpine protection, outdoor safety, and backcountry impact minimization
  • Lead and support hiking, camping, trail work, and stewardship activities during hiking season
  • Provide instruction, supervision to youth groups and other participants
  • Collaborate with Ridgerunners and trained volunteers to facilitate outdoor experiences

The AmeriCorps member will be working throughout the entire State of Maine. Public transportation is severely limited. This assignment requires an at-home office, and State-wide travel, camping and hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

In addition to AmeriCorps benefits, including a stipend, education award, and health insurance, site benefits include a $4,400 housing stipend, phone reimbursement, mileage reimbursement, and office supplies.

We partner with health centers, substance misuse recovery centers, public schools and other types of agencies meeting public health needs to provide AmeriCorps members. Those members: engage youth in programs to prevent substance misuse; create food security programs, provide vaccination education, create community integration opportunities for people with disabilities, and research and implement public health interventions to meet the pressing public health needs of underserved communities. Members gain strong skills through their experiences and often get hired for professional public health positions immediately upon completion!
