Become a part of the Intercultural Community Center and support youth through mentoring and academic support!

The Intercultural Community Center (ICC), founded by New Mainer leaders, provides educational, health, and social services that empower New Mainer families in Greater Portland to achieve stability and thrive. ICC provides free, inclusive programming, including transportation for participants residing in Westbrook and Portland, to ensure equitable access to all services. ICC’s Youth Program includes an academic support afterschool program for middle school students in Westbrook, operating Monday through Thursday, as well as a seven-week summer day camp running Monday through Friday for the same population. In addition, ICC offers Adult Programming, including English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and seasonal swim lessons. ICC seeks to empower immigrant families in their journey to becoming self-sufficient, productive, and resilient members of the community. All programs are offered at no cost, are culturally inclusive, and are designed to support the successful integration of New Mainers. Through partnerships with community-based organizations, government agencies, and local nonprofits, ICC fosters meaningful connections and promotes long-term sustainability.

Public Health AmeriCorps members serve as integral contributors to ICC’s Youth Programming team and broader community. Based on individual interests and professional goals, members have the opportunity to both support and enhance programming by shadowing experienced instructors and developing new initiatives that address the evolving needs of participants. Members are encouraged to design and implement projects that strengthen youth outcomes. Previous initiatives have included integrating social-emotional learning curricula into summer programming and creating extracurricular offerings, such as a Dungeons & Dragons club, to support literacy and storytelling development. The AmeriCorps member in this role will help address the public health challenge of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) by fostering safe, supportive relationships and protective factors, while also strengthening ICC’s capacity through data collection, family engagement, and program coordination to deliver inclusive, evidence-based programs that improve health and educational outcomes.

As a Youth Engagement Specialist, the AmeriCorps member in this role will:

  • Provide daily hands-on classroom support for youth programming
  • Facilitate small groups and structured activities
  • Encourage student participation by actively engaging alongside youth in activities (e.g. field trips)
  • Support inclusive access to programs by motivating and assisting new participants
  • Design and implement a long-term initiative of your choice that addresses a recognized need in the student population
  • Develop creating programming that supports areas such as literacy, social-emotional learning, and enrichment activities
  • Monitor and evaluate student participation levels in programming
  • Increase family engagement
  • Track and document family connections to resources and support services
  • Contribute to building stronger community support networks through outreach and engagement

In addition to AmeriCorps benefits, including a stipend, education award, and health insurance, site benefits include weekly grocery assistance through Locker Project, lunch provided daily (when students are on-site), transportation to and from programming locations (for field trips), free professional development: ICC has a budget dedicated to professional development, and if the member finds something they are interested in, we will cover the expense, laptop, mouse, and headphones are provided, 10 sick days are available.
