Position details
Passionate about nutrition and outdoor learning? Join our innovative charter public high school team in rural Maine to support student health, from gardening to nutrition and first aid.
The Ecology Learning Center (ELC) is a small rural public charter high school serving 130 students in grades 9–12. Its mission is to immerse students in Maine’s ecological and cultural landscapes while fostering authentic, hands-on learning through mentorship and craft. ELC develops compassionate, resilient leaders prepared to meet today’s challenges. Located in Unity—home to the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA)—the school is surrounded by farms, orchards, and forests, 30 minutes from Belfast and Waterville (Colby College) and 90 minutes from Acadia National Park.
The AmeriCorps member in this role will advance student wellness by managing first aid resources, supporting nutrition education for breakfast and lunch – especially during outdoor learning – and contributing to the school’s farm-to-cafeteria garden program. The member will also partner with a certified nurse to coordinate vision and hearing screenings, helping ensure students are healthy and ready to learn.
As an AmeriCorps member in this role, the Student Wellness Coordinator will:
- Engage directly with high school students (grades 9–12) through daily conversations, responding to needs and concerns
- Maintain records and inventory using Google Docs
- Facilitate outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and optional cross-country skiing or mountain biking, under the guidance of the Director of Outdoor Programs and Nutrition Director
- Promote healthy eating during breakfast and lunch, connecting school garden activities with the nutrition program
- Organize and manage first aid supplies, including bandages and over-the-counter medications
- Support long-term projects to increase the use of locally grown ingredients in meals for outdoor programs
- Track and report outcomes, including student participation in school meals, percentage of locally sourced food, and maintenance of a robust first aid inventory system
- Participate in training, including a three-day, two-night outdoor adventure with full teaching faculty before the school year begins
In addition to AmeriCorps benefits, including a stipend, education award, and health insurance, site benefits include school-provided breakfast and lunch.
