ADEPT Maine Problem Gambling Programming VISTA

Position Summary

Position details

Term Date: Flexible Start Dates for Year-Long Position
Location: Augusta, ME
Focus Area: Community Outreach, Poverty, Public Health, Youth

As online gambling expands, the rewarding field of problem gambling services is evolving. Shape the future by leading the way to develop recovery support for Maine people affected by gambling harm!

ADEPT (formerly AdCare) is a nonprofit based in Augusta with approximately 30 years of experience in program management and workforce development related to the prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery of substance use disorders, behavioral health, and related public health issues.

Through a contract with the Maine CDC, ADEPT administers Problem Gambling Services for the state. With the expansion of online gambling, the need for services and resources is growing. Until recently, the program had just one staff member—the Problem Gambling Services Coordinator. A Prevention Coordinator has since joined the team, and now a VISTA member will play a key role in building recovery support services for Mainers impacted by gambling harm: https://adeptme.org/problem-gambling/.

Gambling disorder is recognized in the DSM-V as the only non-substance condition under “Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders.” It affects the brain’s reward system similarly to substance use disorders yet remains hidden and highly stigmatized.

People with gambling problems come from all walks of life, but research shows that low-income individuals and minorities experience a higher impact. The United Way reports that in 2023, 40% of Maine households earned below the ALICE Household Survival Budget threshold for their household composition and location: https://www.unitedforalice.org/key-findings/maine.

The VISTA Problem Gambling Recovery Coordinator will research best practices in other jurisdictions, then help design and implement new recovery support programs in Maine. This position offers a unique chance to develop services and resources in a rewarding field with significant growth potential.
