From Obstacles to Opportunity: Sam’s Second Chance Story

Finding Purpose at Goodwill

Sam Jackson knows what it means to face obstacles head‑on, and make the most of a second chance.

Today, Sam is the store manager at the Goodwill in Bangor, leading a team and contributing to a mission that feels deeply personal. His journey to this point was not easy, but it is proof that with opportunity, hard work, and support, meaningful change is possible.

“I’m a firm believer that if I can overcome the obstacles that were placed before me, you can too,” Sam shared.

Learning Skills and Looking Ahead

For much of his early life, Sam was focused on surviving the moment in front of him. Long‑term plans felt out of reach. But during a period of incarceration, he began to develop skills that would later help shape his future.

“I honed a lot of skills while I was there,” Sam explains. “I developed better people skills, office skills, and a stronger work ethic.”

Those skills, combined with a desire to do better for himself and his family, found a place to grow when Sam joined Goodwill.

“Goodwill gave me the opportunity to showcase those skills,” he says. “It allowed me to think about the future and build toward something more.”

A Full‑Circle Connection

Goodwill has been part of Sam’s life for as long as he can remember.

Raised by a single mother alongside two brothers, resources were limited. Thrift stores were a practical part of everyday life.

“Goodwill was always there for us,” Sam says. “Not just clothing, but books and other things we needed.”

His mom worked hard to give her children every chance she could, sitting them down to work through math problems or memorize important passages, always encouraging them to stay focused and hopeful. Goodwill was woven into that effort, quietly supporting the family along the way.

“When you’re little, you don’t really understand your financial situation,” Sam says. “But now I can look back and see how important that support was.”

Giving Back Through the Mission

Today, Sam finds purpose in giving back to the same organization that once helped his family.

“To be here and help other people, or contribute to the programs Goodwill offers, that’s rewarding,” he says. “They helped us when we needed it. Now I get to be part of that for others.”

As a store manager, Sam plays a key role in supporting his team, serving the Bangor community, and helping ensure Goodwill’s mission continues to reach people who need it most.

Moving Forward With Gratitude

Sam believes that progress often starts with appreciating small victories and finding a workplace that reflects your values.

“Nothing should be able to hold you back,” he says. “Find a place that complements your values. Goodwill complements mine.”

For Sam, Goodwill is more than a job. It is a chance to move forward, care for his family, and help create opportunities for others along the way.

“That’s why I’m here.”
