From HiSET to Career Success: Benjamin Leavitt’s YouthBuild Journey
December 18, 2025
When Benjamin Leavitt joined LearningWorks YouthBuild, he was looking for a fresh start. Like many young people ages 16-24, finishing school and finding a career felt daunting. YouthBuild gave him the tools, and the confidence, to make it happen.
Through the program, Benjamin earned his HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) and gained hands-on experience in construction and culinary arts. He also received industry-recognized certifications and career guidance that helped him discover his strengths and interests.
“This program definitely helped me through a lot,” Benjamin says. “They challenge you, but it helps you grow. It feels like a fresh start, a new life.”
According to Lily, a career advisor at LearningWorks YouthBuild, the key to success is building meaningful connections. Benjamin did just that. His positive attitude and eagerness to learn stood out, leading to a full-time job shortly after graduation.
“He’s self-motivated, works well with others, and is always looking for the next thing to learn,” Lily shares. “Watching him grow into a professional has been incredible.”
YouthBuild doesn’t just prepare students for jobs, it opens doors to possibilities. Benjamin toured places like Maine Medical Center and Seahawks Stadium, gaining exposure to diverse careers. These experiences, combined with vocational training and support, made his transition from school to work smooth and successful.
“Getting the HiSET feels like a way to move on, get a job, and live my life,” Benjamin says.
