Finding His Place: How James Built Confidence and a Career Through His Passion for Cooking

For James, cooking has always been more than just a hobby. It’s something that brings him joy, confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

“I really like cooking, and I’m proud of myself,” James said.

When James connected with Goodwill Northern New England’s workforce services team, he had a clear interest in culinary work but needed support finding the right opportunity. Through individualized employment services, he worked with Vocational Support Advisor Linda Gellman to build job-search skills, gain confidence and take steps toward meaningful employment.

Today, James is part of the team at Applegreen’s Kennebunk South Travel Plaza, where he helps prepare food for the facility’s Sbarro restaurant. More importantly, work has given him the opportunity to grow, contribute and build confidence in his abilities.

Building a Path to Employment

When Linda first met James, she immediately recognized his enthusiasm and positive outlook. She recalls that he seemed to light up the room from the moment he walked in, leaving a strong first impression with his positive energy.

During their early conversations, James shared his passion for culinary work, baking and serving others. Together, he and Linda focused on preparing for employment opportunities by building a resume, developing a cover letter and connecting with employers throughout York County.

Those efforts helped James gain the tools and confidence needed to pursue the kind of work he wanted.

According to Linda, one of James’ greatest strengths has always been his determination.

“He’s hardworking, always early and never gives up,” she said. “He just needed the opportunity.”

Making an Impact Every Day

That opportunity came through employment at Applegreen, where James quickly became a valued member of the team.

Stephen Hart, Plaza Director at the Kennebunk Applegreen, says James’ contributions have made a lasting impression. He describes James as dependable, positive and someone whose work plays an important role in the success of the plaza.

James helps prepare food for the Sbarro restaurant and has become highly skilled at making dough and cheese, work that Hart says is essential to the operation.

Beyond his responsibilities, James is known for the attitude he brings to work each day. Hart says his positivity is contagious and that spending time with James can brighten even the most challenging day.

Growing in Confidence Through Work

As James has settled into his role, both his employer and support team have seen him grow in confidence.

Hart says James arrives ready to work, takes initiative and is always looking for his next task. That drive has helped him become a trusted member of the team while continuing to develop new skills.

For James, employment has become more than a paycheck. It has given him the chance to build relationships, contribute to his workplace and demonstrate what he’s capable of accomplishing.

That growth has been especially meaningful for Linda, who has watched his journey from the beginning. She believes James has a bright future ahead of him and sees even greater opportunities for him in the years to come.

One of the clearest changes, according to Hart, has been James’ confidence.

“He’s really found his place. I feel like he really feels whole, like he’s part of something.”

Meaningful employment has given James the opportunity to contribute, connect with others and take pride in his work each day. The confidence he has gained continues to shape how he sees himself and what he believes is possible for his future.

The Power of Opportunity

James’ story is a reminder that employment is about more than having a job. Meaningful work can help people build confidence, develop new skills, form connections and discover a stronger sense of purpose.

Through Goodwill Northern New England’s workforce services program, James received the support he needed to pursue his goals and connect with an employer who recognized his strengths. Today, he’s making valuable contributions to his workplace while continuing to grow personally and professionally.

“As Linda puts it, with the right opportunity and the right understanding, work can create meaningful change.”

James is proof of that impact. Through his passion for cooking, dedication to his work and the confidence he’s gained along the way, he has built a career that allows him to contribute, succeed and feel like part of something bigger.
