John’s Journey to Recovery and Purpose at Goodwill
October 14, 2025
John Arsenault has been a dedicated team member at the Goodwill store in Auburn, Maine, for more than 18 years. But his inspiring journey began long before he joined the retail team.
In 1985, John survived a life-changing accident that left him in a coma. When he woke up, he had to relearn how to walk and talk. It was a long and difficult recovery, but John never gave up.
“I’m here to tell you that anything is possible,” John said. “As long as you put your mind to it, you can do it.”
John connected with Goodwill Northern New England through one of its workforce programs. With support from job coaches and supervisors, he built new skills and eventually joined the Auburn store team, where he’s been making a difference ever since.
Today, John is known for his kindness, strong work ethic, and ability to brighten a customer’s day.
“I love helping people,” he said. “When they get a good deal, I like giving them a good deal. They’re happy, I’m happy.”
For John, working at Goodwill is more than just a job; it’s part of his healing.
“Working here became part of my healing routine,” he said. “I like that I can work with my disability and it doesn’t matter to anyone here.”
Mike Richards, the Auburn store manager, said John is one of the most memorable team members he’s worked with.
“He’s quick to remind customers how he started, going through our programs and then becoming part of the team,” Mike said.
Assistant Store Manager Beth Dorrell agrees.
“John exhibits all eight Goodwill behaviors. He’s kind, he listens to understand, and he’s flexible. Whether it’s running the register or helping a customer to their car, John is always there.”
John encourages others to give Goodwill’s workforce programs a chance, even if they’re unsure at first.
“When you go to the programs, you don’t know what to expect,” he said. “But there’s always someone there, a job coach, a boss, a supervisor, someone to lead you straight.”
Every day, John gives it his all.
“I try every day so when I go home, I can sleep good knowing I helped people.”
