Kindling Collective is a queer-centered gear library and education center creating an accessible pathway to outdoor experiences in Maine (Wabanaki Confederacy Territory).  We aim to build community and support people in nurturing and sustaining relationships with the natural world. At Kindling Collective, members can check out the gear they need for camping, hiking, and backpacking adventures. You don’t need to be queer to be a member; you just need to be on board with supporting and affirming queer people’s access to the outdoors. Additionally, Kindling Collectives offers guided trips and events designed by and for queer people all year round.

An Americorps member will support the growth of a robust volunteer program, improve the function and efficiency of the gear library, and engage the wider community through local nature-based events and enhanced communications. Kindling Collective is looking for an AmeriCorps member who is passionate about upholding the values of their mission.

A member in this role will:

  • Serve as gear librarian for check-out/check-in of equipment in an effort to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of the library.
  • Manage outdoor gear library inventory (camping, hiking, backpacking equipment).
  • Interface with customers in person at the library to promote community engagement and inclusivity.
  • Ensure that the outdoor gear inventory is accessible to those who have faced barriers to outdoor experiences and education.
  • Take the lead in transferring Kindling’s online gear library inventory and user information to new digital platform.
  • Develop and maintain an efficient volunteer management and communication system.
  • Increase community engagement by coordinating Kindling day events.
  • Plan and carry out volunteer appreciation events.
  • Enhance and co-facilitate volunteer training.
  • Support and participate in Kindling trip leader training.
  • Increase engagement of community and gear library members by piloting monthly member engagement initiatives.
  • Assist with promotion and social media communications to increase community engagement, membership, and trip participation.
  • Attend outdoor recreation professional development opportunities.
