Foodscapes Volunteer and Engagement Coordinator
Position Summary
Position details
Maine Foodscapes focuses on reducing food insecurity in southern Maine by providing low- income families and individuals with free gardens, gardening and food preparation instruction, and a community experience based on increasing direct access to healthy, nutritious produce. Maine Foodscapes also participates in the network of southern Maine organizations and programs that support food production as a means to reduce food insecurity; Maine Foodscapes has several partnerships that enable us to leverage additional resources to combat hunger and poverty. Because organic vegetable gardening embodies the principles of sustainable agriculture, reduces the transportation component of food costs and improves the micro-ecology in the area where the garden is located, the Free Garden Project also generates positive outcomes for the environment.
The member in this role will work to improve food security in communities served by Foodscapes by training volunteers, coordinating them in the field and growing the volunteer network to help expand Foodscapes reach. They will also support the development of various tools, procedures, and systems at Foodscapes. They will complete this through the following activities:
- Recruiting volunteers and conducting volunteer outreach to connect qualified individuals with the appropriate volunteer role.
- Host orientations for volunteers and provide ongoing onsite training and support for volunteers.
- Host and attend various community events.
- Work on new ways to celebrate the volunteers at Foodscapes and plan the annual Volunteer Appreciation event.
- Develop and implement best practices for volunteer management including making improvements to and finalizing the volunteer handbook.
